Gary, the combo was Karios and the Screaming Bell. ;)

If your opponent thinks he can read that as an ability to pick results the dice are physically incapable of, then best the game be instantly over and you can go and play with someone less of a dick.

The whole thing is clearly a 'bash some minis against each other and have a laugh' ruleset. Which I'm fully behind as a concept, I'm much more likely to play that than a game that requires me to have hundreds of rank and file guys.

It's just a bit sad that classic WHFB had to die for this to come about as the overlap between the two is pretty minimal bar the figures. They should really have just kept both going and then everyone could be happy.

The problem is that even if it is a good ruleset for having a laugh with, that is all it is good for. It is clearly being marketed as a proper game, and as the replacement for warhammer fantasy. It has a £75 starter box.

With no way to balance it, there is really no way of telling if the game you are about to play will be fun or not, especially for new players. This is a serious problem. Think how many of us got into these sorts of games through GW. Imagine some bunch of kids start playing this, then one of them gets a load of models off his older brother who used to play (or something). How long are they going to have fun? Are they going to stick with it and eventually pick up other games? Probably not. They are going to give up and go back to their video games.

The thing is, you can have just as much fun playing with a well written ruleset. The miniature game with best written ruleset I know of would be Warmachine. You can play it competitively, or you can throw a bunch of stuff on the table and play an interesting scenario. One does not exclude the other, and both use the exact same ruleset. I don't understand why GW seem to think that a game being fun has to exclude it from being competitive or well written.

Oh yes. The complete lack of any kind of vague balance mechanism is probably enough to put me off and I'm happy with giving everything else in the new rules a go.

For me to enjoy a game I want to feel like both sides had a good shot at victory. Throwing points entirely out of the window makes that more effort so I probably just won't bother.

I was happy at the idea of things being reduced in granularity so I was choosing 10 [points] of stuff rather than 1,000, but leaving it entirely up to the players is abdicating your responsibility as game designer one step too far for me.

I can see it being a laugh as long as you keep it sensible with armies, but it really does need a maximum on unit sizes or it really will get beyond stupid. Poor WFB :( It used to be such a great game between 5th and 7th editions.

Now the stuck up elves creating Brettonia as a defensive wall I like.

As the man says, there are lots in there which could have been really good.

That's the greater daemon of Tzeentch I was talking about, and as I said you cannot change a D6 into a Dsomething else. Changing the result of a dice will still be in the scope of the dice.

As fantasy gamers can I bring us back to the real world. It's crap ok so shut up. How can we get to so many pages about a game we will never play or buy.

For those who later in the year don't play KOW I will burn you as heretics of fantasy gaming and forever mark you as a spacemarine.

Thing is, they've left enough ambiguity in the wording that someone could try it and there's nothing to prove them wrong, except opposing POV.

In full beard mode:
Single dice roll: Nowhere does it clarify what a single dice roll is - I've seen games where that means a single dice (amongst multiples), I've seen games where it means all the dice in that roll. Depends whether they mean single dice roll or single dice roll.
Result of your choosing: Nowhere does it say it has to be a legal result - "I roll a 7 on d6" is valid under that wording.

Only takes one dick among a group, especially if they're new players, and it turns everyone off the game. See, if I was to play this, I know I could pull this off once (and probably get told to "F*** Off" by Mike ;) ) and then go and play the game properly afterwards. But that's because we've been playing against each other for years.
