They actually do have a function once you are reduced to a single fighter, because that fighter is then allowed to use any number of abilities as long as you have the dice for them, and the way I read it is that you can't use the same ability twice. Maybe there are other times you are also allowed to do this that we don't know about yet? I agree it does seem like an odd design choice though.

Nope still useless then as the extra limitation it imposes is having other friendly fighters nearby!
