How about pick your own team but no two teams the same and the lower ranked players choose first.

I'm also in the "pick what you like" camp, especially if there are 3 or 4 new players. I'd already said I'd like Nurgle or Chaos, which are hardly powerhouses in short-term leagues.
Keep it simple. Can always bring in other things if/when we run another league.

Tempted by wood elves or Norse from a quick skim of the end of the rule book. Where do you guys normally get the models from?

All over the place. GW don't support it any more, so eBay/resellers for GW figures, there are lot's of 3rd party "fantasy football" manufacturers and lots of people kitbash from GW WFB/40k models.

I'll try and get a list of 3rd party sites together in the next few days, but I think the cheapest option is Impact's Trollcast teams, resin-like: http://www.impactminiatures.com/index.p ... fballteams
They can be got direct in the UK from Tritex Games (http://www.tritex-games.co.uk/), though the range is due to expand soon once they've finished shipping a Kickstarter that added 20 teams to their range.

I wouldn't bother with models just yet, between us we have all the teams probably twice over. See if you like the game first mate and if you don't then you can use the money for more 40k stuff!
