The very first Warhammer championships.....

Myself and several member of my old club were lucky enough to get involved in the very first Warhammer championships a few decades ago (using 1st & 2nd ed rules/lists), two of us made it through to the finals and until my last battle I was in 4th place - but came across a rules lawyer who'd found a loophole in the rules and did not fancy taking my army on. He had discovered that he could keep the bulk of his army off the board, beginning the game with only his wizards and army banner (who started off in a building so were never visible). In the rules of the time all wizards could start with one spell cast already, so he'd used illusions of army units. For the three turns of the game, as my army advanced, his wizards cast Wind of Death (protected by their banner) - which wiped out around 25-33% of my troops each time. By the third turn I'd dispelled his illusions but was down to only a handful of troops left, at which point his army finally arrived - I resigned and ended up in 9th place (still not bad going, and the umpires agreed he was legal but against the spirit of the game - one of the reason in later championships the rules included aspects like fair play, best painted etc).
Still I won a pewter Warhammer which I still have buried somewhere in the house.
